The ELM327 V2.1 is an affordable and versatile OBD2 diagnostic scanner designed for both DIYers and professional automotive technicians who want a quick and easy way to check their vehicle's electronic systems. This device is compatible with most 1996 and newer OBD2-compatible vehicles (including American, Asian, and European brands such as Ford, GM, Toyota, BMW, Volkswagen), but may not support some older protocols such as J1850 VPW and J1850 PWM, which are common on certain Ford and GM models. The device connects through the vehicle's OBD2 port (usually located under the steering wheel) and allows for real-time data reading and trouble code analysis using Bluetooth, USB, or WiFi (depending on the model).
The ELM327 V2.1 is based on Elm Electronics firmware, but alternative chipsets that provide similar functionality are often used due to licensing costs. The device supports full OBD2 functionality, including reading and clearing trouble codes, displaying real-time data (e.g. engine speed, coolant temperature, vehicle speed), and monitoring the engine control system (ECU). It is a plug-and-play device that requires no batteries or cables (power is supplied via the OBD2 port) and is compatible with Android and Windows devices. iOS support is limited as Apple's Bluetooth protocols are not compatible with most ELM327 Bluetooth adapters - in this case the WiFi version is recommended.
Main features:
- Real-time data display: Displays data such as engine speed (RPM), coolant temperature, vehicle speed, fuel system status, air flow rate, intake air temperature, oxygen sensor voltage, and fuel pressure.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth (up to 10m range), USB or WiFi versions available; Bluetooth pairing code is usually 1234 or 0000.
- Compatibility: Works with Android and Windows devices (recommended apps: Torque Pro, OBD Auto Doctor, Car Scanner); WiFi version recommended for iOS.
- Protocols: Supports OBD2 protocols including ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4 (KWP2000), ISO 15765-4 (CAN), but not J1850 VPW and J1850 PWM, which may limit compatibility with some older Ford and GM vehicles.
- Limitations: Does not read or erase ABS, SRS, VSC, or service light codes as they require special tools; also may not accurately display EVAP, O2, or Lambda data on cheaper clones.
- Languages: Supports multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and others (depending on the software).
- Operating voltage: 12 V (powered via OBD2 port).
- Current consumption: 45 mA (standby mode).
- Connection: Bluetooth 2.0/4.0, USB or WiFi (depending on model).
- Dimensions: 47 x 32 x 23 mm.
- Weight: Approximately 22 g.
- Operating temperature: 0°C to 50°C.
